The city started the competition to connect up-and-coming performers with East Tennessee's rich entertainment community and give them a shot at launching a career on stage. The contest will be completely virtual this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pigeon Forge Executive Director of Tourism Leon Downey is hoping that the competition helps provide relief for struggling performers amid the virus, especially with the expanded audition access.

“We know that performers were affected by the economic shutdown and operating restrictions necessary to combat the spread of COVID-19,” Downey said in a release. “Pigeon Forge’s theater community would like to help those performers, along with other talented folks, by bringing the Path To Fame Virtual Talent Competition online for 2020.'

From on the road to online

The Pigeon Forge Department of Tourism traditionally takes the show on the road, but, for the first time, auditions will be online because of the coronavirus.

Video auditions for Path to Fame are open and not bound by any geographical borders. Instead, competitors will be grouped by four 'hometown' markets including Asheville, North Carolina; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Huntsville, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia.

Performers will be asked which city they live nearest to and be placed in the corresponding category. The new format should help judges narrow down talent before deciding the winner of an exclusive prize package, which includes the career-building tools needed to succeed in the industry.

A shot at a big break

Grayson Thurman, of Frankfort, Kentucky, won the 2019 Path To Fame competition and has since sung on stages at two Pigeon Forge theaters, Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa’s Lyrics and Lore festival. Thurman most recently sang background vocals for country star Kane Brown at the Grand Ole Opry for the 2020 Academy of Country Music Awards.

The winner of the 2020 Path To Fame competition will be awarded a one-year mentorship with Nashville-based talent executive John Alexander. The veteran talent manager discovered Kelsea Ballerini and worked more than a decade at Great American Country television network. His connections will put the champion in contact with the best in the business.

The first place performer also will get to meet with Craig Morgan; most known for his hits “That’s What I Love About Sunday' and “Redneck Yacht Club;' open a show in Pigeon Forge and receive additional career assistance.

How to start your Path To Fame

The Pigeon Forge remote talent competition is open to anyone over the age of 18 who fits the search criteria.

Contestants may showcase their talents as a vocalist, instrumentalist, comedian or specialty act. Individuals and groups of five or fewer can compete. All contestants must register and submit an audition video following the contest rules to be eligible to win. Submissions must be in by Sept. 30.

Judges will select four finalists to represent each of the hometown markets. Then, 16 finalists will compete for the first place prize.
